Daniel C, Year 11
Last week, in a team with 4 other friends from the Cyber Discovery Elite programme, we competed in a cyber-security competition based around defending against hackers (SANS Cyber Defense NetWars). We were up against many cyber-security professionals (one team below us had 56 SANS certifications between them!) but as a team of age 15-18 we were very proud to come 3rd and win the coin prize – “the nicest looking coin in all of SANS”, according to a moderator.
The competition registration was free for anyone in the world taking a SANS course this summer – we were notified about it on our SANS homepages so we decided to sign up to test our skills since we had all taken part in the course SEC504 as part of CyberStart Elite this year. We didn’t expect to do anywhere near as well as we did – I’m still ecstatic! The challenges involved skills such as cryptography, incident handling, log analysis with software such as Kibana/Evebox/Wireshark, linux command-line kungfu and steps in breaking the cyber kill-chain.
